Teatro di Marcello
An ancient Roman theatre that feels like a quieter preview of the Colosseum.
Ancient Rome, panoramic terraces, underground history and hidden churches on the Celio.
Start beside the Teatro di Marcello, climb to the Capitoline Hill and discover two panoramic stops before continuing to the Vittoriano. Walk down Via dei Fori Imperiali with Ancient Rome unfolding on both sides, reach the Colosseum, then continue to the Basilica di San Clemente for its extraordinary underground levels and finish at the circular Santo Stefano Rotondo on the Celio.
Allow around 5 hours for the core route if you visit the underground levels of San Clemente. Don't rush Via dei Fori Imperiali, and check church opening hours before starting the final part of the route. The panoramic elevator at the Vittoriano remains optional. After Santo Stefano Rotondo, Luzzi is an easy informal option for a Roman dinner.
