From Prati to Castel Sant’Angelo — Vatican Views & Hidden Rome

Shopping, local food, St Peter’s, panoramic terraces and a riverside sunset finish.

⏱ 5 hours
🚶 Moderate
🌇 Late morning / afternoon into sunset

Start at Piazza del Popolo and cross into Prati for shopping, gelato and local food. Continue through Piazza Risorgimento to St Peter’s, explore Borgo Pio and Via della Conciliazione, then slip through the hidden Arco dei Banchi before reaching Castel Sant’Angelo. Finish along the Tiber with Ponte Umberto I, the Palace of Justice and Sacro Cuore del Suffragio.

LOCAL TIP

Plan around 5½ hours for the core route. The Arco dei Banchi is a very short hidden stop: enter from Via Paola, look up at the starry ceiling and continue towards Via del Banco di Santo Spirito for the reveal of Castel Sant’Angelo. Add more time for a coffee at Sciascia, the St Peter’s Dome, a proper aperitivo or dinner, or a visit inside Castel Sant’Angelo. Treat the Vatican Museums as a separate major experience because they can turn this into a full-day itinerary. If possible, time Ponte Umberto I for sunset.
